VietPhrase (vietphrase.app) is a free Chinese-Vietnamese translation tool available as a web app, as browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox, and as an iOS app with a Safari extension (see the separate Safari privacy policy). Việt Phrase, Hán Việt, and Mặc Hi translation run on your device.
We do not intentionally collect or store your translation content on our servers. Dictionaries, books, reading progress, and saved translations are stored locally on your device using IndexedDB and localStorage. The web translator's modes run in your browser and do not send the text being translated to VietPhrase or to any third-party translation service.
If you choose to enable Cloud Sync, the app requests access to Google Drive's app-specific folder (drive.appdata scope). This allows the app to:
We do not access, read, or modify any other files in your Google Drive. The access token is stored locally on your device and is never sent to any third-party server.
The AI assistant is optional. When you send a message, the assistant receives your message, the recent chat history and — only when it calls a “read text” tool — the Chinese text in the input box and the current translation (main page), or the paragraphs on screen and the chapter you are reading (Reader). Since 8 October 2026 the assistant can also, when it calls the dictionary or memory tools, read your custom dictionary entries, the proper-name candidates it detects in that text, the per-book glossary, and the notes you ask it to keep; these are sent the same way. Where that data goes depends on which of the two modes you use.
Free VietPhrase assistant (default). By default, and as a fallback when the provider you selected has no credential, requests go from your browser to a same-origin Cloudflare Pages Function (/api/llm-free), which forwards them to InferX (model.inferx.net) under VietPhrase’s own account. The function code does not persist or log the content of your messages. To limit abuse and watch capacity it keeps two kinds of records in a Cloudflare D1 database: daily request counters keyed by a salted SHA-256 hash of your IP address (deleted on a later request once the day has passed), and, since 8 October 2026, one metadata row per request — timestamp, model, token and character counts, time to first token, total latency, outcome (completed, stopped by you, upstream error), the VietPhrase page that made the call, and the same hashed IP — with no message text, deleted after 30 days. InferX processes the request under its own terms. The assistant asks for your consent before the first message is sent this way.
Your own provider (bring-your-own-credential). If you configure a provider in the LLM settings, the same data is sent directly from your browser to that provider (Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, GLM, or a custom endpoint) and does not pass through VietPhrase servers, except Vertex AI, which uses the same-origin proxy described below. In the Reader, the assistant asks for your consent once per provider (once per host for custom endpoints) before it sends any book content.
In both modes, conversations are stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB, up to 30 per page). You can delete each conversation from the history list in the panel.
Gemini Developer API (AI Studio) is an optional bring-your-own-credential feature. If you use an AI Studio key or authorization key, it is stored locally in your browser and sent directly to Google in the x-goog-api-key request header. If you choose Google OAuth, the Google Cloud quota project ID is stored locally, while the cloud-platform access token is kept only in JavaScript memory and is discarded when the page is reloaded or you disconnect.
Gemini prompts are sent directly from your browser to generativelanguage.googleapis.com; they do not pass through VietPhrase or Cloudflare. Google processes these requests under the credential, account, and quota project you selected.
Vertex AI is an optional bring-your-own-key feature. Your Google Cloud project ID, location, selected model, and authorization-key setting are stored locally in your browser. If you choose Google OAuth, the cloud-platform access token is kept only in JavaScript memory and is discarded when the page is reloaded or you disconnect.
Because Vertex AI's streaming endpoint is not called directly by these browser pages, the prompt and your chosen credential are sent to a same-origin Cloudflare Pages Function and immediately forwarded to Google Vertex AI. The application code does not persist or log the prompt, authorization key, or OAuth token. Google processes Vertex AI requests under the Google Cloud project and account you selected.

The VietPhrase browser extension (Chrome and Firefox) translates Chinese text on any website you visit. The following applies specifically to the extension:
